Sandeman Port and Japanese Food - who'd have thought it?

For those who think that Port is only for Christmas - or for drinking after a meal with cheese and cigar - it's time to think again!  Wine Educator and blogger Quentin Sadler thought the idea sounded "completely bonkers" when he was invited to a Japanese Food and Sandeman Port matching dinner with George Sandeman, but was surprised to find his preconceptions thoroughly confounded.

The dinner took place at the fashionable Aqua Kyoto Restaurant just off Regent Street, and and featured dishes ranging from Edamame Beans, Prawn and Scallop Haramaki to a dessert of White Sesame Parfait with a Cherry Tea Sauce and crisp Sesame Praline partnered with Sandeman 10, 20, 30 and 40 year old Tawny Ports.  Aged Tawny Port is delicate, evolved and complex, matching particularly well with the umami  notes in several of the savoury dishes as well as being delicious with the parfait and 'explosive' with the praline.  Quentin summarises: "it made me realise that I could drink a lot more Port if I just broaden the range of foods that I drink it with, it is much more versatile than I had ever thought".
