Canada
Canada, the land of ice hockey and winter sports is not exactly the first place you think of when talking about fine wine regions, but Canada has a sizeable and growing wine industry. Winters may be damned cold but the summers are long and hot too and the industry centered largely in the Niagara area of Ontario has many very good wineries our own Chateau de Charmes to name but one. The regularity of extreme cold in winter has given Canada a natural advantage in one very specialised area Ice Wine. This heretofore German speciality requires temperatures in January to drop to somewhere between -10 to -14 degrees, freezing the ultra-ripe berries solid and allowing tiny quantities of pure sweet elixir to be squeezed from them. This is not a problem in Canada and the are justifiably proud of these amazing sweet wines.
