Portugal
The Portuguese like their wine. Domestic consumption rivals that of Italy and France and so it's no surprise that vineyards cover Portugal from the very far north of the country to the tourist mecca of the Algrave in the south. Probably more than any other country Portugal has stuck to its viticultural guns and refused to cede ground to the march of the international grape variety. The many dozens of rather lovely but weird sounding varieties- for example Loureiro, Periquita, Encruzado and Arinto - provide a treasure trove of delight for the dedicated wine lover. One wine produced in Portugal that everyone in the world knows of is, of course, Port from the high Douro valleys. The historic connection between the UK and the Port houses stretches back to the 17th century. In the case of SG's most famous Port producer, Sandeman, trade began in 1790 when young George Sandeman established the business in Oporto. To this day there remains a genuine descendent of the founder, called George of course, in charge of things today.
