France » Alsace
Isolated wine region on France's eastern border separated from Germany by the mighty Rhine. The wines of Alsace are fascinating and in many respects different from the rest of France. For starters 90% of the production is white and single varietal, labelled as such, just like their new world rivals. Tall fluted bottles are a legal and elegant requirement. There are many varieties planted in Alsace but it is wines made from riesling in particular, but also pinot gris, gewürtztraminer and muscat that have built the regions reputation for greatness. High toned, precise, concentrated and elegant wines that express the regions terroir beautifully.
