France » Jurançon
Jurançon is one of the more obscure appellations of France but we reckon it deserves a lot more intention. The first thing you need to know about it are the two principle grape varieties Gros Manseng and Petit Manseng. The former is chiefly used in the production of wonderfully scented and hedonistic wines labelled Jurançon Sec. The latter though, thick skinned, small and concentrated, is used for the regions speciality, its impressive sweet wines. It is these, with their distinctive green tinge and made by partially drying the grapes while still on the vine, that set the wine lovers pulse racing. They age beautifully too and tend to offer superlative value for money.
