Rioja the King of Spanish wine regions historically represents the bedrock of Spanish wine sales in the UK and continues to do so in now in the 21st century. Rioja is one of the world's best known and most loved wines a must have on any wine list. The area whose principle grape is Tempranillo (ably supported by Garnacha and a few others) is remarkable in its makeup. Some 20,000 growers, who on average have a meagre 3 ha of vineyard - strange in a place that produces such a large volume of wine. Our producer Bodegas Emperatriz, located in the Rioja Alta area, is uniquely proud that it has 100ha all to itself. Being in direct control of their fruit pays huge dividends in quality.
