Is it fair for Pouilly Fumé to be always the bridesmaid to Sancerre's bride? We think not, after all the Loire's most expensive cuvees, those of the late, great Didier Dageneau, hail from these parts. Pouilly consistenly delivers taut, scented and precise Sauvignon Blanc from the limestone slopes opposite the town of Pouilly sur Loire (from which the appellation draws its name). Sauvignon is called Blanc Fumé in these parts and it's in this appellation that the smoky notes are most evident.
