Châteauneuf is the Rhone's most important appellation and perhaps the best known for its quality. At the highest levels the wines are extraordinary expressions of the terroir. Grenache Noir, especially these days, dominates the blends (which may still contain up to 13 different varieties) and these thin skinned, flavour packed grapes add vigour and intensity of fruit to the wines.
