France » Southern France » Bergerac-Monbazillac
Bergerac lies immediately and due east of Bordeaux. A bit like a supporting act at an Elvis gig, it has been difficult for the producers, in the shadows of such famous neighbours, to be taken seriously outside of the region itself. A real shame as the wines are made very much in the style of Bordeaux and from the same grape varieties. Up to a certain level too they can match Bordeaux blow for blow in terms of quality and beat them on price. That is very much the case for the sweet wine appellation, Monbazillac, many of which are the equal of Sauternes - including our own from Chateau Theulet - but drink younger and are far more affordable.
