France » Bordeaux » Pomerol
A small but highly significant neighbour to St Emilion, its ancient patchwork of small holdings and low key buildings, stand in stark contrast to the grandeur of much of Bordeaux. Merlot is the dominant grape variety (about 80% of plantings) and it is here, perhaps more than anywhere else in the world, that it finds its finest expression. The low yielding vineyards on iron rich clay (crasse de fer as they call it) owned by the likes of Petrus, Lafleur and L'Evangile are exceptional. In the best vintages the wines produced are profoundly deep, concentrated and complex, with price tags to match their quality and limited availability.
