France » Bordeaux » Saint-Emilion
The largest and most diverse of the right bank appellations, it is also one of the most exciting, forward thinking and dynamic - not often you can say that about Bordeaux! In terms of terroir, variety is the key, and the region boasts a wide range of soil types and aspect. It is also far less reliant on merlot than say smaller rival, Pomerol. It also has its own classification system that divides the wines into St Emilion, St Emilion Grand Cru, Grand Cru Classé and Premier Grand Cru Classé. Whether it helps at the lower end is open to question but at the higher end it provides a fairly accurate reflection of the quality of the wine in the bottle.
