Tasting notes
Second wine of Château Beychevelle, this Cabernet Sauvignon-dominated wine is soft and elegant, with rich cassis and black berry fruit and supple tannins. Made for drinking earlier than the 'Grand Vin', it can be enjoyed after 3 years ageing.
Production method
Fermentation in stainless steel and epoxy-lined temperature controlled vats. In January after the harvest an assemblage/selection is made between the Grand Vin and the 2nd wine. Amiral is aged for 18 months in one year old barrels previously used for Chateau Beychevelle, and 15% in new oak.
Producer notes
Fourth Growth, 74ha Estate in Saint Julien which, despite its steadfast unwillingness to go down the Parker route in terms of style, has never-the-less become one of the big names in the Bordeaux hierarchy over the last two decades.
Beychevelle, being situated in the most southern part of the appellation, is often characterised by its finesse and elegance (Margaux in style) in contrast to its more muscular northern neighbours (close to Pauillac). At its best the wine has a supple elegance all of is own.
The second wine, Amiral de Beychevelle, is also deeply impressive.
